Nine Hashers braved the rain & mud to enjoy the delights of Muret & the banks of the majestic river Garonne at this St. Valentine’s Day Hash, which was Hared by Rocket Lips and I.

We welcomed Likkum, a “professional hasher” based in Bearn, Switzerland. He regaled us with stories of a multitude of hashes he has visited and hashers with whom we were all acquainted. He courageously took the Long trail and had to climb a shear hill of mud and water in the pouring rain.

At the start, Its Complicated was our only other runner and being faster he did all the checks until we were caught by Hairy Clam, about 6 km from the start – he had checked his e- mail at 3 pm and noticed there was a hash so was LATE starting. Undaunted Hairy Clam heroically found the trail and caught the runners at the viewpoint overlooking the Garonne for a photo opportunity and to witness Likkum going “off piste” into the bush as he slid into the undergrowth off the muddy path.

The walk was also demanding with a steep climb and descent on slippery steps. ET was as usual the FRB of the walking pack and Short Shift was uncharacteristically walking due to a leg injury; so the walkers outnumbered the runners again.

All observant participants passed beside thousands of snow drops under the trees along the route, rewarding us all with a glimpse of the spring soon to arrive.

We circled up by the Garonne, and
• Rewarded the hares for a well-marked trail
• Welcomed Likkum for his visit & comraderie
• Rewarded Hairy Clam, for his untimely arrival
• Rewarded our RA, It’s Complicated, for the warmer but wet weather
• And finally were led in song by Likkum, who taught us where the non-English Hashers may suggest we should park our chariots….
Hash Flash photos will be circulated (as soon as I figure out how to extract them from my phone) via an e- mailed link to the Hash Google group. Please let me know if you didn’t get them (paulmasters@sfr.fr).

Please join us for the St. Valentine’s Day Hash in magnificent Muret, along the banks of the Garonne departing promptly at 15:00 from the car park at Quai Saint Marcet, 31600 Muret on Sunday 11 February 2018. Please wear something (red?) to acknowledge the St. Valentine’s Day theme. You will enjoy superb views over the Garonne, pass by an ancient monument and stroll in the vicinity of the site of the 13th century battle of Muret, between Simon de Montfort’s medieval Knights and the liberal supporters of the Cathars. Potentially there will be shiggy on route and both walk and run have one steep incline so be prepared.

Address: Quai Saint Marcet, 31600 Muret
Take D12 from centre of Muret to cross Garonne in the direction of Eaunes and the Quai St. Marcel car park is immediately on your left at the end of the bridge.

Co-ordinates N 43.457625 deg E 1.328462 deg

The Burns Hash is always special but this was exceptional as I feel sure all the participants would agree.

Thirteen hardy Hashers braved the rain & wind (appropriate Scottish weather?) to enjoy the beautiful trail, which was heroically set by Short Shift, around the fields of Fontenilles.

Sweet Pea & IP were suitably attired in kilts and Tam O’Shanter bonnets (as mentioned in a Burns Poem) were worn by several hashers to join in the Scottish spirit of the event.

The trail was muddy, some said the muddiest ever, and slippery but all the more enjoyable for that. Surprising views, forest paths and a dearth of flour ‘blobs’ kept us all looking around and in conclusion it was a hash by, which we will measure future 2018 trails.

We repaired to Hairy Shoes & Short Shift’s house to enjoy an extended circle, where we
Rewarded the hares & our hosts for the Burns Party; Hairy Shoes & Short Shift
Punished our RA, It’s Complicated, for the windy wet weather
Rewarded Un Accent Comme Ca, for his untimely arrival, which he celebrated by performing a stylish down-down (noticeably absent in many others!) and
Thanked Privet for returning to the hash after a whole years absence
The Burns Party continued with food provided by many participants including Hairy Shoes’ traditional Scottish haggis & ‘neeps’ (turnips or navets), Thelma’s tasty Philippine inspired foods and our youngest contributor, Un Accent Comme Ca’s, Chocolate and Pear Tart.

My thanks to Hairy Shoes & Short Shift and to everyone, who contributed to the party food, drinks and general organisation required to put on this special Burns Hash party. I think it was very successful.
